In October 2021, a devastating fire left this Arabi home with extensive structural damage. Five months into the reconstruction, the March 2022 Arabi tornado struck the neighborhood, adding a second catastrophic event to an already complex project. This case study follows how Riverbend Renovation adapted, protected the home, and completed the reconstruction despite challenges few projects ever face.
In early October 2021, a fire severely damaged this family home in Arabi. The fire ultimately burned itself out after consuming the available oxygen, leaving the structure standing but extensively damaged. One of the factors that made this fire unusual was the presence of closed-cell spray foam beneath portions of the flooring. The foam contributed to extremely high temperatures beneath the floor system while limiting oxygen, creating intense heat that caused significant structural damage before the fire eventually self-extinguished.
Although the home remained standing, the damage from the fire, smoke, and heat required extensive reconstruction. Tragically, the family's two dogs were lost in the fire, making the event even more devastating for the homeowners.
Following the fire, Riverbend Renovation completed a comprehensive evaluation of the structure and developed a detailed reconstruction plan. The project included demolition of fire-damaged materials, structural repairs, smoke and soot remediation, rebuilding damaged living spaces, and coordinating the many trades required to restore the home. As work progressed, the focus shifted from emergency response to carefully rebuilding the family's home.
On March 22, 2022, while reconstruction was already underway, the Arabi tornado struck the neighborhood. The project immediately shifted from rebuilding after a fire to protecting the home from a second major disaster.
Riverbend responded immediately by evaluating the additional damage, securing the structure, and protecting the home from further weather exposure. Within just a few days, the home was weather-tight again, allowing reconstruction to continue instead of losing months to additional deterioration.
Managing a single insurance claim can be challenging. This project required coordinating repairs resulting from both the fire and the tornado while keeping reconstruction moving forward.
Riverbend prepared detailed repair scopes, documented newly discovered damage, and worked through the additional insurance requirements created by the tornado without losing sight of the overall goal—returning the homeowners to a safe, fully restored home.
Projects of this magnitude rarely go exactly as planned.
Throughout reconstruction, Riverbend addressed:
Each challenge required careful planning and communication to keep the project moving forward.
Restoring this home required rebuilding far more than the visibly damaged areas. Structural repairs were completed before new insulation, drywall, flooring, cabinetry, trim, paint, doors, and finishes were installed. Every phase of construction was carefully coordinated to ensure the completed home met the same standards Riverbend brings to every renovation project.
Despite surviving both a devastating fire and a tornado during reconstruction, the homeowners were ultimately able to move back into a fully restored home.
What began as one of the most challenging projects Riverbend has undertaken became an example of how careful planning, persistence, and communication can overcome even extraordinary circumstances.
This project highlights several principles that guide every Riverbend reconstruction project:
