End-of-Summer Maintenance Checklist for New Orleans Homes

As summer winds down in New Orleans, it’s the perfect time to prep your home for fall. The heat might be easing up, but hurricane season isn’t over yet - and small issues left unchecked now can turn into costly repairs later. At Riverbend Renovation, we recommend giving your home a once-over before Labor Day to make sure it’s ready for whatever the coming months bring. Here’s a simple, effective maintenance checklist to help you protect your property and avoid surprises.

Inspect the Roof and Gutters

Summer storms can loosen shingles and clog gutters. Before fall rains roll in, get your roof in shape.

  • Look for missing or damaged shingles
  • Check flashing around vents, chimneys, and skylights
  • Clean gutters and downspouts to prevent overflow
  • Add gutter guards to reduce future buildup

Test and Service Your HVAC System

Your A/C has been working hard. Show it some love before the cooler months arrive.

  • Change the air filter (if it’s been over 30 days, it’s overdue)
  • Clear debris from outdoor units and trim plants back
  • Schedule a professional inspection or tune-up
  • Consider duct cleaning if you notice dust buildup or airflow issues

Seal and Caulk Windows and Doors

Gaps in seals let in moisture, bugs, and hot or cold air - not ideal in a city with both humidity and pests.

  • Check caulk around windows, doors, and exterior trim
  • Replace weatherstripping if it’s cracked or missing
  • Test for drafts using a candle or incense stick

Check for Water Damage and Moisture

Summer humidity and storms can cause issues in hidden places.

  • Inspect attics and crawlspaces for signs of moisture or mold
  • Check under sinks and around toilets for slow leaks
  • Look for water stains on ceilings and walls

Riverbend tip

Addressing small leaks now can prevent major mold problems later.

Power Wash and Reseal Exterior Surfaces

Heat, UV, and storms take a toll on outdoor finishes.

  • Power wash siding, decks, and walkways
  • Reseal or stain decks and porches as needed
  • Inspect fencing and handrails for loose boards or rot

Clean and Check Safety Equipment

Summer is a good time to test the systems that keep your home safe year-round.

  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Check fire extinguishers for pressure and expiration
  • If you have a generator, run and service it before peak storm season

Prep for Fall and Late Hurricane Season

We’re not out of the woods just yet. Late August through October still brings high storm potential.

  • Stock up on batteries, water, and emergency supplies
  • Review or update your home insurance policy
  • Secure or store loose outdoor items like furniture or tools
  • Clear storm drains or yard debris that could block runoff
